Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) is looking for an intern to work on the next generation of building energy modeling and controls. As part of the CleanTech initiative, we are looking at opportunities in building energy management to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint while improving comfort for the occupants. The research is focused on enabling technologies that substantially speed up the use of scalable building energy models and the deployment of model predictive controls, estimation, and diagnostics.
The intern will be involved in the development of python-based software tools to support this research, specifically, on linking multiple simulation programs (Modelica, EnergyPlus, etc.) to create a testbed for rapid prototyping and verification of novel building modeling and control approaches. The responsibilities also include documenting and maintaining the code repository. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and full of ideas to shape the next generation of building controls.
Develop and deploy a co-simulation platform based on Modelica and FMI standards.
Assist in first principles (physics-based) and data-driven (grey-box) modeling of hygro-thermal dynamics
Develop and manage databases
Clean up, contribute and maintain the project repository
Assist in documentation of the project and contribute to conference and journal publications
Working towards a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics or a related field
Expertise in EnergyPlus and Modelica
Excellent programming skills (language-independent!)
Basic knowledge of machine learning algorithms
Understanding hybrid modeling, controls, state estimation, and experience with embedded systems is a plus.
