The Hardware Research and Technology Laboratory (HRTL) at PARC, a Xerox company, is a group of innovative scientists and engineers who invent and develop new technologies for future commercialization. Research in HRTL includes 3D printing, sensor systems for the internet of things (IoT), carbon capture technology, cleantech, applications of artificial intelligence, robotics and much more.

We are looking for an experimentalist to help us develop novel micro-device technologies. A first project will be on PARC’s micro assembler, a manufacturing concept that uses electric fields to micro-manipulate small semiconductor chips which are then transferred to a substrate. Because this system can move many chips at the same time, it provides a fundamentally scalable way for assembling small devices in high chip count systems such as micro-LED displays, large area sensors, IOT devices, and systems that require heterogeneous materials integration. The work is very interdisciplinary, involving precision micromechanical systems, image processing, thin film electronics, software control systems and algorithms, microfluidics, transfer interfaces, and electrophoretic/dielectrophoretic physics. This job will be most satisfying for candidates who are eager to learn and apply new skills to a wide variety of projects both independently and as part of a team.


• Design and build electro-opto-mechanical test setup

• Design and Perform experiments to test new ideas and advance system mechanics, electronics, optics

• Develop software to control and automate experiments

• Contribute to projects around heterogeneous integration, such as optoelectronics co-packaging and high-density chip interconnect


• PhD in applied physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, photonics, bioengineering, or related fields.

• Enjoy spending time in the lab

• Strong experimental skills, including building custom lab components and setup

• Experience working with and troubleshooting complex electro-opto-mechanical systems

• Experience writing lab equipment control software using tools such as Python and LabVIEW

• Experience in manipulating micro-objects with either electrostatic, magnetic, microfluid, acoustic, optics, or surface energy a plus

• Familiarity with mechanical design tools such as Solidworks and AutoCAD a plus

• Love of learning and working in a team environment

The successful candidate must be able to meet the requirements under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
