Description & Requirements

PARC, a Xerox company, is in the Business of Breakthroughs®. Practicing open innovation, we provide custom R&D services, technology, expertise, best practices, and intellectual property to Fortune 500 and Global 1000 companies, startups, and government agencies and partners. We create new business options, accelerate time to market, augment internal capabilities, and reduce risk for our clients. Since its inception, PARC has pioneered many technology platforms - from the Ethernet and laser printing to the GUI and ubiquitous computing - and has enabled the creation of many industries. Incorporated as an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of Xerox in 2002, PARC today continues the research that enables breakthroughs for our clients' businesses.

The Hardware Research and Technology Laboratory (HRTL) at PARC (A Xerox Company) is a group of multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers who enjoy the opportunity to invent and develop new technologies, foster innovation, and launch new businesses. Research conducted by HRTL spans a wide range of technologies, including: composites for light-weighting and energy applications, technologies for carbon capture and emissions reduction, additive manufacturing, and much more.

The Materials Interfaces and Processes group within HRTL is looking for a chemist, materials scientist, or chemical engineer to lead the development of new materials for corrosion and high temperature-resistant ceramic matrix composites. The candidate will synthesize and process a variety of materials (e.g. polymers, ceramic particles, carbons) using a combination of solution chemistry and high-temperature solid-state chemistry techniques. In addition, the candidate will contribute to experimental design, intellectual property development, materials fabrication, and materials characterization.

The successful candidate is someone who can innovate at the boundary of materials processing and materials chemistry, quickly acquire new synthesis and materials processing skills, think across different length scales in a materials and processes, and someone who is enthusiastic about hands-on lab work. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and be motivated to work in a safe and multidisciplinary lab environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Synthesize materials (polymers, ceramics, nanoparticles, particle functionalization, etc.)

  • Process and fabricate polymers, ceramics, and composites through a variety of techniques such as molding, casting, sintering, and pyrolysis

  • Characterize chemical, physical, mechanical, thermal, and corrosion properties of materials (e.g. universal testing machine, XRD, SEM)

  • Read literature to develop and implement new research ideas

  • Contribute to a wide range of HRTL activities as a subject matter expert in materials design, synthesis and processing

  • Document research activities and communicate findings within PARC and to the broader scientific community, and participate in review meetings with Dept. of Energy

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree (or Bachelor’s or Master’s with equivalent industrial research experience) in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, ceramics engineering, polymer science, or related fields.

  • Applicants who will complete PhDs by spring 2022 are encouraged to apply.

  • Hands-on experience with materials chemistry. Breadth across solution chemistry and solid-state chemistry, or organic and inorganic systems is a plus.

  • Hands-on experience with materials processing or fabrication. Experience processing high-temperature materials, carbons, ceramics, polymers, or composites is particularly relevant.

  • Knowledge of the physical phenomena underpinning a variety of materials processes, such as complex fluid flow, rheology, pyrolysis, sintering, and/or casting and curing processes

  • Experience characterizing properties of composites: physical, mechanical, thermal, oxidation, corrosion, etc.

  • Desire and ability to collaborate with colleagues across disciplines

  • Creativity and innovative thinking

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
